April is Earth Month, a time when we commemorate our achievements in protecting the planet and pledge to do what we can to protect it for future generations. While some still doubt the existence of climate change, most of us can agree that our modern lifestyles affect our planet. That is why Sponge & Sparkle is committed to using green cleaning practices that have a minimal effect on the environment.

“Sustainability” and “Sustainable Living” refer to a range of choices each of us can make to minimize our impact on natural resources and the environment without sacrificing our own comfort or that of future generations. During Earth month, we will run a series of articles on ways we can make our homes more sustainable.

One way to make our homes more sustainable is to reduce our energy use. Most of the electricity generated in America is produced by burning fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling.

Here are four ways to reduce your energy use:

  1. A dirty filter slows down air flow and makes the system work harder. Save energy by changing your air filter regularly—ideally every three months.
  2. Have your HVAC system tuned up annually to maximize efficiency and comfort.
  3. Install a programmable thermostat.
  4. When you replace your home’s heating and cooling system, consider installing ENERGY STAR-qualified equipment. The Energy Star program also certifies the most efficient home appliances, lighting, and windows and doors. Visit http://www.energystar.gov for detailed information.

By reducing your energy use, you’ll make your home more sustainable and save money too!
