The Ultimate Guide to House Cleaning: A Checklist to Print & Keep

Have you ever wondered what are the necessities of keeping a house clean? A home is a big place with lots of rooms, drawers, cabinets and shelves. A list of what to do would help a new homeowner or anyone who wants to be able to keep it clean and maintain it.

Cleaner Cleaning the Bedroom with VacuumSponge & Sparkle has been in the cleaning business for over 30 years, so we know how to keep a home clean. We use a checklist in the homes we clean to be able to keep up with it all, and make sure that all areas were cleaned properly. Here are a few tips from our cleaning checklist.

The living area is typically the room you gather in as a family, so it gets the most crumbs and can get the most spills from food. It also can get a lot of foot traffic. Here is a list of what to do and what to pay attention to in the living area.

Living Areas:

  • Vacuum all carpets and rugs
  • Vacuum all hard surface floors with a small canister vacuum
  • Vacuum (or dust) the stairs
  • Dust the Light fixtures
  • Dusting blinds, ceiling fans, picture frames, etc.
  • Polish tables
  • Clean glass surfaces, TV screens
  • Clean the sofa cushions, vacuum crumbs
  • Mop any hard surface flooring
  • Remove any extra books, papers, or clutter

The kitchen area is usually the busiest room in the home, and it can get the dirtiest in a short amount of time. Here is how to get your kitchen the cleanest.

Kitchen Area:

  • Take out all garbage
  • Dust the Light fixtures
  • Dust blinds
  • Wipe down table and bar area
  • Clean glass and appliances on outside
  • Clean the sink and countertop
  • Sweep and Mop the floor
  • Load the dishwasher
  • Hand wash large pots and pans

The bathrooms can often take more time than a large kitchen, because they are the areas that need more scrubbing. However, if you want a complete clean, scrubbing is necessary to maintain a clean bathroom.

Bathroom Areas:

  • Clean the toilets
  • Clean the sinks and around the faucets
  • Wipe the counter top
  • Scrub the shower and tub
  • Clean the glass and mirrors
  • Dump the trash

The main areas of your home are the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living areas. After you clean those, tackle the bedrooms one at a time. If you are expecting company, I suggest cleaning one bedroom per day until you get caught up.

Bedrooms and/or Home Office:

  • Vacuum all carpet
  • Dust the Light fixtures
  • Dust the blinds and the pictures on wall
  • Dust and Polish all dressers and side tables
  • Clean glass and/or TV screens
  • Remove any extra books, papers, or clutter
  • Take out the trash

After cleaning, you will feel refreshed and your home will look and feel better.
